          HOUSEHOLD SAFETY TIPS

Keep an emergency list of phone numbers by the bed and the main phone.  Have a non-portable phone in the home in case of power failure because portable phones run on electricity.

Beware of bogus callers or people who pose as salespersons, telemarkers, or banking personnel.  They may want access to your personal information, banking and credit card information or they may try to get into your house.

ALWAYS ask for identification from anyone who comes to your door saying they represent a utility company.  Representatives from utility companies always carry ID and should not hesitate to show it.  If you have any doubts, DO NOT LET THEM IN.

Encourage the use of walkers and adaptive equipment as needed.  Unsteady gait and balance can result in falls.

Install night lights to prevent stumbling and disorientation upon awakening in the night.

Place a flashlight next to the bed and another by your favorite chair.  Check the batteries often.

In the winter time, eat regular meals with warm drinks.  This provides energy and warmth.

Dress appropriately in the winter.  Wear a coat, mittens, and a hat.  Wear several layers of clothing that can be put on or removed as needed.

Move and exercise.  This will help with circulation and make you feel younger and stay flexible and fit.  But get someone else to shovel snow.  Snow is heavier than it looks and lifting and straining may tax your heart and cause possible problems.
